RFA CONVENTION 2019 - “EAT, SLEEP, TRUCK, REPEAT” is based on our passion for the industry and describes how trucking encompasses our lives.
The Conference provides the perfect platform for us to engage, educate and share valuable information with delegates. The programme will focus on current issues that are affecting the industry, legislation updates, innovative ideas that can help businesses and new information from industry experts. Some of the topics that we will cover include the economic and political outlook, labour matters, new legislation and the impact that it has on business, new technology, BEE and safety. The RFA Convention is the highlight event for the South African trucking industry and takes place over three days. It includes two half-day conference sessions, evening functions, a golf day, spouse’s programme, activities and leisure time for delegates to relax and unwind. This annual event attracts key industry stakeholders which include high level decision makers, senior executives, government, media and business owners. The picturesque Royal Swazi Spa Valley Resort is the destination for the event. The venue is set in the natural tranquillity of the Ezulwini Valley and is surrounded by nature, mountains and a host of activities and facilities which make for a memorable experience. The Conference will host a few fun activities starting on the Sunday with a Golf Challenge whilst the non-golfers can test their skills at our truck yard test drives. The evening functions will consist of a Mexican Themed Welcome function and a Viva Las Vegas Gala dinner on the monday. The spouses will be pampered while the delegates are at the conference.

Opening and Welcome

Gavin has been employed as the Technical and Operations Manager of the RFA since 2007 and is the spokesperson for the Association. Gavin was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 2019. Prior to joining the RFA Gavin served as the Deputy Director: Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) at the Department of Transport. He was tasked with the implementation of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) and the AARTO programme, on which the points demerit system is based. Gavin holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Higher Education Diploma (HDE), Senior Management Diploma (MDP) and other general management qualifications.

Kevin’s wealth of knowledge has been gained through the various positions which he has held in the local oil industry, in consulting and in mining. With respect to oil, over 20 years’ experience in this sector both locally and abroad principally in the downstream area covering a diverse range of activities from design, refinery planning and scheduling, supply chain management through to market and investment analysis and regulatory affairs.

Khanyiselo began her journey at GreenCape as a Smart Electricity Analyst. Her efforts have been focused on creating an enabling environment for the uptake of Rooftop photovoltaic Power Stations and other small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) technologies in the Western Cape. She transitioned her focus to sustainable transport assisting GreenCape to explore the transport sector of the green economy and has recently produced GreenCape’s first EV market intelligence report. Khanyiselo now works as a leader of the sustainable transport sector. She is a thought leader and an EV expert supporting the development of the nascent electric vehicle market in the Western Cape and the rest of South Africa

Ongama is a lecturer and PhD candidate in the Political and Conflict Studies Department at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU). He writes on political economy, economic development, and transformation. His PhD research is focused on the “Political Economy of Transformation in the Construction Sector in Nelson Mandela Bay From 2005-2015”. For his masters (completed in 2011 at NMMU), he focused on the political economy of industrialisation in South Africa, using the Coega Project as his case study. Following his BA degree from Rhodes University in 2005, Ongama gained over 10 years’ working experience in industrial development, local government, and community-based health, education, and psychosocial development as well as strategy and consulting services to national and Eastern-cape based small business development agencies. He was the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Top 40 under 40 in 2011.

Liesl De Wet gained operational carbon foot printing experience when she managed a carbon footprint project for a massive logistics company. During her time as the ‘Sustainability Champion’ she gained valuable experience in environmental sustainability, particularly within the logistics sector. Liesl is a member and previous co-chair of the NBI business climate change working group, whose main objective is to define a South African business position on climate change by creating engagement forums and knowledge sharing sessions. She is a trained climate reality leader through the AL Gore climate reality leadership programme and currently consults to the Road Freight association on Green Transport. Liesl is a qualified Professional Business Coach.
